Work and heat, as two fundamental quantities in thermodynamics, become stochastic variables when entering the microscopic world. When a microscopic open system is driven out of equilibrium, the joint distribution of work and heat, compared to the marginal distributions, encode more information about the nonequilibrium processes, including the irreversibility and the fluctuation. For driven open systems coupled to multiple heat baths, we find a hierarchical structure of fluctuation theorems for the joint distribution of work and heat. These fluctuation theorems extend the well-known Jarzynski equality and Crooks fluctuation theorems from the situation of a single heat bath to that of multiple heat baths, and are derived in both the classical and the quantum setups. We also propose a general method to calculate the joint distributions of work and heat via the Feynman-Kac equation. For the classical Brownian motion model, we verify the validity of the fluctuation theorems with the joint distribution of work and heat.

全海涛,北京大学博雅特聘教授。2002年和2007年分别在中南大学和中国科学院理论物理研究所获得学士和博士学位。2007年至2012年分别在美国能源部洛斯阿拉莫斯国家实验室和马里兰大学从事博士后研究。2012年入职北京大学物理学院,2018年晋升教授。全海涛的主要研究领域是统计物理和量子物理的基本问题。先后获得过国家自然科学奖二等奖(第二完成人)和国家杰出青年科学基金等荣誉。
