报告摘要:

In this talk, we explain how time-scale separation provides a valuable starting point for a consis- tent thermodynamic theory of small classical systems strongly interacting with their environments, which may be either in or out of equilibrium. The resulting strong coupling thermodynamics ex- hibits maximal similarity with the weak coupling theory, and assigns clear physical meanings to various thermodynamic quantities. It also provides a fresh understanding of the origin of the second law, and generalizes its validity domain to arbitrary non-equilibrium processes. Hence we argue that time-scale separation constitutes the key to a unified theory of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics.

个人简介:

Xiangjun Xing is a professor of physics in Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He obtained Phd from University of Colorado in 2003. His research interests include statistical physics, soft condensed matters, and complex systems.
