报告摘要:

Mathematics is the language of physics and probability is arguably the most effective mathematical tool that physicists, along with all other scientists, use. However, mathematics is not physics, and one should be aware of differences and interconnections between these disciplines, in order to avoid serious errors, and actually develop useful predictive theories. In this lecture, I will invite the audience and myself to ponder the matter, illustrating with concrete examples how probability is used in statistical physics to understand thermodynamic phenomena, pointing out failures and successes. I will conclude with a list of present day research problems in which questions concerning probabilities play a fundamental role, that range from the dynamics of active matter to cosmological problems.

个人简介:

Lamberto Rondoni, Professor of Politecnico di Torino, has over 180 publications on various subjects ranging from analysis of EEG to cosmological problems, including Kinetic Theory, applications of stochastic processes to chemical reactions and pattern formation, anomalous diffusion and nonequilibrium phenomena in general. He is the Editor-in-Chief of “Non-equilibrium Phenomena” section of journal Entropy, Editor of “Computational Mathematica”, and Editor of book Series “Applications of Chaos and Nonlinear Dynamics in Science and Engineering” within Springer Verlag “Understanding Complex Systems” series.
